Student Story: Rosemary Chukwurah

Studying for a Bachelor of Engineering in Maritime Technology

Rosemary, originally from Nigeria, is currently studying Maritime Technology at Novia University of Applied Sciences, Aboa Mare.

When and how did you become interested in maritime studies?

I have always been fascinated by the maritime industry, which led me to pursue a Higher National Diploma in Marine Engineering at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. After completing my studies, I worked onboard as a 3rd Engineer before transitioning to Bureau Veritas in Nigeria, where I served as a Marine and Offshore Surveyor. Seeking to further enhance my expertise, I decided to pursue an upgrade in Finland.

What is your favourite memory or experience from your studies so far?

I have so many memories, especially from my time working at sea and the various challenges it brings. However, one of my favourite moments was coming here to continue my studies – it felt like a dream come true. I have always aspired to reach the peak of my career, and this opportunity is a significant step toward that goal.

Where do you see yourself working in the future, and why?

I see myself taking on leadership roles within the Nigerian maritime industry, working to drive positive change in the maritime sector across Africa.

Do you have any advice for prospective students?

My advice to prospective students is to stay determined, keep pushing forward, and always strive for excellence. Aboa Mare is an excellent school when it comes to training seafarers, offering good practical and hands-on training, especially through simulations, hence every day spent here is worth it.

What do you do in your free time, and how does it reflect your personality?

I spend most of my free time with my family. I am a positive and easy-going person who enjoys learning, meeting new people, and making friends. Above all, I believe in embracing each day to the fullest – after all, we only live once!
