Polar Code Advanced On-Site Training

3-day on-site course at Aboa Mare in Turku, Finland covering advanced requirements set by STCW Code A-V/4 and IMO Model Course 7.12: Advanced training for ships in polar waters.

All aspects defined in IMO Polar Code and Model Course will be covered. The course consists of classroom lectures and simulator exercises and is delivered 100% on-site, thus physical attendance is required. The Polar Code refresher course contains the same modules and training targets as the regular Polar Code course.

  • Our Polar Code training is approved by the Finnish Maritime Authorities (Traficom)
  • We are specialized in simulator training and R&D projects to enhance safety and sustainability of Arctic shipping as well as shipping in other ice-covered waters. We have for instance participated in ice related projects like Winmos 1&2 and ASTP (Arctic Simulator Training Program).

  • We participated in the planning process of the Polar Code IMO Model courses (7.11 and 7.12) and our first Polar Code course was delivered in 2016

Course titlePolar Code Advanced
Student profileMasters, chief officers and navigating officers required to have completed Polar Code Advanced training. Ship owner personnel working with ships operating in polar areas and authorities wanting to have a deep understanding of the demands set by polar operations to personnel and ships and their equipment.
PrerequisitesA trainee attending the course is required to fulfil minimum STCW II/1 requirements for officers in charge of a navigational watch. Aboa Mare Polar Code Basic Training certificate is also required, alternatively Polar Code Basic Training CoP from an EU/EES country.
Training personnelExperienced master mariners with several years of experience of operating in ice covered waters, cold climate and darkness.

AssessmentKnowledge is assessed with a written exam. Competences and skills are assessed through simulator assessment.
