Engine Instructor - Alternative Fuels

Aboa Mare Ab provides continuing education and training in the maritime sector. Our course offering includes both on-site training and online learning. Our maritime simulators offer customers unique opportunities for practical training, testing, and research and development activities. Our clients include Finnish and international shipping companies, authorities, businesses, and private individuals.

We are now looking for a motivated and experienced Engine Instructor with expertise in gas and alternative fuel operations.

About the role

In this role, you will deliver high-quality training for maritime professionals, combining theoretical lessons with simulator exercises.

You will work with our modern engine room simulators, teaching participants from all over the world in an international environment. Most courses are conducted in English.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver training within alternative fuels operations, including IGF Code-related courses as well as BRM & ERM and other engine-related training
  • Facilitate simulator-based training and practical laboratory exercises
  • To develop and improve training material content and methods
  • Collaborate with colleagues and industry partners

We value

  • Solid experience in delivering training related to gas or alternative fuels
  • A customer-oriented and outgoing mindset and willingness to develop new training approaches
  • Strong connections within the maritime industry
  • Chief Engineer experience, technical superintendent experience, or a similar maritime background is an advantage

Qualifications

  • Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer or Engineer Officer (STCW A-III/2)
  • Previous experience as an instructor in IGF Code, methanol and engine continuing education.
  • Experience working in workshop and/or laboratory environments
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken

Employment terms

  • Employment starts on 1 August 2026 or as agreed
  • Location: Turku, Finland
  • A trial period of six months applies

About Aboa Mare

Aboa Mare Maritime Academy and Training Center is a leading maritime training, education and simulation center in Turku, Finland, founded in 1813. Aboa Mare offers degree programmes, continuing education and seminars for maritime professionals, with strong expertise in the IGF Code, the Polar Code, BRM and ERM simulation, and sustainability. Aboa Mare provides training that meets the requirements laid down in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The simulation center comprises full mission bridge and engine room simulator, VTS and GMDSS simulators. Students and course participants can undertake practical exercises using simulators, designed to replicate actual ship bridges and engine rooms. Aboa Mare also utilises its maritime expertise and simulation know-how to deliver high-quality research and development projects. Vocational education is provided through Axxell and university-level education through Novia University of Applied Sciences.
